EarlySense, a market leader in proactive patient care solutions, announced today that Robert M. Wachter, MD, has joined the company’s Medical Advisory Board.

“Hospitals are facing a growing challenge in providing high quality medical care under tight budgetary constraints. Nowhere are these challenges greater than on the general medical-surgical ward, where increasingly ill patients are cared for by overstressed doctors and nurses. We simply have to find ways to monitor our patients using new intelligently designed information technology tools, rather than depending on human eyeballs and shoe leather. Continuous monitoring systems such as the EarlySense system hold great promise for filling this crucial patient safety gap. This is why I am so excited about joining EarlySense’s Medical Advisory Board,” said Dr. Wachter.

Dr. Wachter is a professor and associate chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where he directs the 50-physician Division of Hospital Medicine. Author of 250 articles and 6 books, he coined the term “hospitalist” in 1996 and is generally considered the “father” of the hospitalist field, the fastest growing specialty in the history of modern medicine. He is a past president of the Society of Hospital Medicine, and is currently the chair of the American Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Wachter is the editor of the US government’s two leading websites on safety, which receive about one million visits annually. He has also written two best-selling books on safety, including , the second edition of which was published in 2012. In 2004, he received the John M. Eisenberg Award, the nation’s top honor in patient safety. For the past five years, magazine has named him one of the 50 most influential physician-executives in the U.S. He was listed as number 14 in 2012. Dr. Wachter has served on the healthcare advisory boards of several companies, including Google. His blog, , is one of the nation’s most popular healthcare blogs. In 2011, as a Fulbright Scholar, he studied patient safety and hospital medicine at Imperial College London.

“Dr. Wachter’s perspective, insight and vast experience are certain to significantly impact and advance the further development of the EarlySense system, which clinicians report has helped medical teams worldwide save hundreds of lives to date in addition to helping in the reduction of adverse events such as patient falls and hospital acquired pressure ulcers. We consider it a great honor to have Dr. Wachter as part of our Medical Advisory Board and welcome him to the EarlySense team,” said Mr. Avner Halperin, CEO of EarlySense.
