Obama nominates Andy Slavitt as new CMS administrator

President Barack Obama asked the Senate to confirm Andy Slavitt as the new administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), the White House announced Thursday. Slavitt assumed the role of acting administrator after former Administrator Marilyn Tavenner resigned back in January. He may face an uphill confirmation battle, however, as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), who also is the former executive vice president at UnitedHealth Group's Optum unit, said Slavitt will face questions regarding his time at UnitedHealth and the insurance company's relationship with CMS.
