Independence Blue Cross to cover telehealth visits

Philadelphia-based Independence Blue Cross is now offering coverage for some telemedicine consultations. The coverage will give health plan members access to virtual visits with their providers through a smartphone or other digital device for medical issues that aren't emergencies. Daniel J. Hilferty, president and CEO of Independence Blue Cross, said in a statement the "virtual visits won't replace the important relationships [that] members have with their primary care physicians, but rather expand [their] options."
