Humana Statement Regarding Coverage for State of Illinois Employees Enrolled in Humana Health Plan

CHICAGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM) today issued the following statement regarding the Illinois state employees and retirees who are currently enrolled in a Humana health plan:

Illinois state employees and retirees deserve affordable health care coverage options that preserve access to a broad range of health care providers, including their current doctors. We recognize that the uncertainty of the last few weeks has been difficult for Illinois state employees and their families, and to avoid further disruption, Humana stands willing to continue coverage under the existing plan for an additional 90 days, to allow members the time they need to select a new health plan option.

Unfortunately, the state of Illinois is requiring changes to the current Humana agreement that could unnecessarily increase health care costs for plan members, their families and other Humana enrollees. The state has announced that the Humana plan for state employees will no longer be an option for them after June 2011.

Although disappointed by the state’s decision, we at Humana are humbled by the outpouring of support from Humana members and deeply appreciate the dedication and commitment of numerous state legislators who worked diligently to protect affordable coverage options for state workers. Humana continues to urge the state to extend the current Humana coverage, as it stands today and without changes, to allow members adequate time to make an informed choice about their future coverage.

Humana State of Illinois members have until 5 p.m. on Monday, June 20 to select their health coverage for the upcoming plan year. They may contact the state with questions by calling (217) 782-2548 or (800) 442-1300. There’s also information for State of Illinois employees at www.state.il.us/cms.
