LOUISVILLE, Ky.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Humana Inc. (NYSE: HUM), one of the nation’s leading health care companies, has been named one of the greenest companies by Newsweek magazine, jumping to No. 72 from No. 317 in 2010 and No. 392 the previous year.

“Such a large rise in this year’s rankings underscores our commitment to being a sustainable company as well as a leading health and well-being enterprise,” said Raja Rajamannar, Humana’s Chief Innovation and Marketing Officer. “We recognize how selective this ranking is, and it clearly reflects our significant progress on the entire corporate social responsibility front. We are committed to attaining a level of excellence in CSR and sustainability at Humana across all lines of business.”

Humana continues to focus on environmental stewardship and transparency. In April, the company received ENERGY STAR® certification by the Environmental Protection Agency for the transformation of its Louisville headquarters into a more energy-efficient facility. This summer, Humana partnered with the Environmental Defense Fund’s Climate Corps Program, retaining a University of Notre Dame MBA student as an EDF Fellow to help identify energy- and cost-efficient opportunities in Humana’s data centers.

The Newsweek rankings rate the world’s largest corporations on environmental performance and are assessed by a rigorous, peer-reviewed research process, including both quantitative and qualitative data. Newsweek partnered with two leading environmental research firms, Trucost and Sustainalytics, to compile the 2011 list. Humana received an overall Green Score of 62.9. The highest-ranked company on the U.S. list scored an 82.5.

Humana also participates in the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP), a global initiative to inventory GHG emissions and evaluate the risk of climate change to business operations. Humana was awarded a score of 81 out of 100 for the depth and comprehensiveness of its carbon reporting. In addition, Humana has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since 2006 and recognized on the FTSE4Good Index.
