Humana grows participation in joint replacement, spinal fusion bundles

Humana has added additional providers to its orthopedic bundled payment models, the company announced.

The expansion includes four new providers in its spinal fusion bundles and 11 in the total joint replacement bundles, Humana said. That brings participation in the spinal fusion model to nine providers across seven states and in the joint replacement model to 75 practices in 11 states.

Thanks to the new agreements, Humana will add the first providers in Oklahoma and Minnesota to the joint replacement bundled payments.

Humana launched the joint replacement bundles in 2016 and the spinal fusion bundles earlier this year.

“We’re delighted to support providers as they quarterback a more coordinated approach to care for their patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery,” Oraida Roman, vice president for Humana’s value-based strategies organization, said.

“Humana is proud to share data and analytics with physicians and clinicians in collaboration toward improving the patient experience and health outcomes in spinal care,” Roman said.

Humana has launched a slew of value-based payment programs over the past year including initiatives aimed at readmissions and hospital costsoncology and maternity care. It also joined forces with Aledade, a primary care consulting company, to grow its value-based care offerings.

The goal in the models, Humana said, is to leverage technology, preventive medicine and care coordination to offer a personalized experience for the member. According to the insurer’s most recent value-based care report, in 2018 it was engaged in 62 bundled payment contracts with providers, a significant jump from 2016 when it had 12 such arrangements.
