Humana Cares Announces Jobs Expansion in St. Petersburg

Humana’s fast-growing national care center will add another 300 jobs by year-end

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Following a tour by U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) of Humana Inc.’s (NYSE: HUM) Humana Cares division, headquartered in St. Petersburg, Humana today announced the national care center will add 300 employees this fall to handle the expansion of the company’s national chronic care management programs.

Humana Cares, which opened its doors in February 2009 with about 200 associates, will employ about 1,300 employees by year end. About 250 of the new positions will be located at the 75,000-square-foot national care center in St. Petersburg.

Humana, which just last month announced it was adding 200 positions to its fulltime workforce at its national Medicare service operations center in Tampa, is one of Florida’s largest health care employers, with more than 5,000 employees statewide.

Humana Cares President Jean Bisio attributed the expansion to an increase in member participation in the company’s Complex Care Management Program and the addition of new members in its Special Needs Plans, particularly “dual-eligible” members who receive both Medicare and Medicaid. These members often have higher-than-average medical needs.

“We are excited to bring our holistic approach to managing care to more Special Needs and dual-eligible members who live with chronic illness,” said Bisio. “We’re confident they too will enjoy the same positive results as Humana members currently served by Humana Cares, such as 48 percent fewer hospital readmissions and medical claims costs that are 32 percent lower than other Humana members have experienced.”

Nelson, Florida’s senior senator, was on hand today at Humana Cares for the jobs announcement, and following a tour of the national care center in St. Petersburg, he also saw a live demonstration of Humana Cares’ national telehealth pilot.

Through the interactive Intel Health Guide, Humana Cares nurses use two-way video to remotely monitor the weight, blood pressure and other key vital signs of some 2,000 Humana members across the country who are living with congestive heart failure.

Hiring will begin immediately at Humana Cares for registered nurses, social workers and community health educators to serve the additional members suffering from chronic medical conditions, such as diabetes, congestive heart failure and coronary artery disease. After an initial training period, some positions include a work-at-home option.

Humana Cares is also hosting an on-site job fair at its Humana Cares Center, 800 Carillon Parkway, Suite 240, St. Petersburg, every Wednesday through the end of September, from noon to 5 p.m.

Bisio also announced today that Humana Cares plans to hold a job fair in September for military veterans and their families at its national care center in St. Petersburg.

Humana Chairman and CEO Mike McCallister recently announced his support for President Obama’s national veteran-employment campaign in a Washington Navy Yard appearance with the President, and set a goal that Humana would hire 1,000 veterans and/or their spouses over the next three years.
