Highmark appoints third CEO in 2 years

Pittsburgh-based Highmark has appointed its third CEO in two years after ousting William Winkenwerder last week. David Holmberg, who previously led vision, dental and stop-loss insurance subsidiaries for Pennsylvania's largest insurer, has taken the helm, reported the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Since the change (to Holmberg) was inspired by a need to accelerate the strategies we already have in place, it's a great signal of stability," J. Robert Baum, Highmark's chairman of the board, told the newspaper. "David's experience with retail and the consumer focus is really responsive to what is happening in the healthcare market now." Baum added that Holmberg will be working closely with other Highmark executives, including the president of its health insurance plans and the CEO of its hospital system, Allegheny Health Network, to better integrate the entire company.
