HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius to resign

Kathleen Sebelius is expected to announce that she is stepping down from her post as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services on Friday, according to multiple news outlets, including the Associated Press and the New York Times.

According to the AP, a White House official has confirmed that Sebelius will resign. The Times reports that President Obama accepted Sebelius' resignation this week, and that he will nominate Sylvia Mathews Burwell as her replacement. Burwell currently serves as director of the Office of Management and Budget.

Sebelius' departure caught Kansas Insurance Commissioner Sandy Praeger, who has worked with Sebelius since 1991, off guard, according to Bloomberg. Said Praeger: "she seemed like she was in it for the long haul."
