Healthways (NASDAQ: HWAY) has signed an agreement with Excellus BlueCross BlueShield (BCBS) to continue administering the HealthyRewards online incentive program to its HealthyBlue plan members through 2015. HealthyRewards encourages HealthyBlue members to take more active roles in managing their health and well-being by offering financial rewards that support and recognize positive behaviors, such as eating better, exercising more and getting routine check-ups. Healthways has administered the program for Excellus BCBS since 2008.

According to Healthways president and chief executive officer Ben R. Leedle, Jr., “Well-designed and managed incentive programs can be an essential driver of sustained behavior change. With the HealthyBlue plan, Excellus BlueCross BlueShield has developed and continues to refine a program that successfully encourages members to take part in activities that improve their health and well-being, and we are pleased to support the operational excellence that contributes to member engagement and satisfaction.”

HealthyBlue plan members use a web portal to record their wellness activities and earn points that can be redeemed for cash, gift cards and merchandise. Healthways maintains the technology supporting the program, runs the redemption center, provides a full-scale customer service function, and delivers comprehensive reporting services to Excellus BCBS that grant insight into program optimization.
