GAO: Fake ACA applicants secure subsidized coverage

Government investigators have been able to purchase health plans and obtain federal subsidies using fake applicantions, according to findings that will be released today, reports The Washington Post. Undercover Government Accountability Office investigators attempted to enroll a dozen fictitious applicants in health plans by phone or using inaccurate Social Security numbers. Out of the dozen, only one fake applicantion was denied subsidized coverage, while the remaining 11 enrolled successfully. The investigation stemmed from House Republicans who expressed concern when the marketplace opened last year that it was susceptible to fraud.  "We are seeing a trend with Obamacare information systems: Under every rock, there is incompetence, waste and the potential for fraud," House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.) told the Post.
