Cigna Health Plans Earn Accreditation from National Committee for Quality Assurance

  • Plans in 94 percent of markets earned “Excellent” or “Commendable” rating
  • Accreditations based on one national NCQA survey for all health plan types in all markets

BLOOMFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) has accredited all 95 of the health plans that Cigna (NYSE: CI) submitted for review. Plans in 94 percent of markets earned a “Commendable” or “Excellent” accreditation.

Last year, Cigna voluntarily let the accreditation lapse for its OAP/PPO plans so that the company’s health plans in all markets and across all plan types could be evaluated at one time in a single national survey. That has now been accomplished.

NCQA Health Plan Accreditation evaluates how well a health plan manages its entire delivery system, including physicians, hospitals and other facilities, and administrative services. NCQA Accreditation enables brokers, employers and other health plan sponsors, as well as individuals, to evaluate the quality of different plans based on common criteria so that health plan decisions can be based on demonstrated value rather than cost alone.

In 31 percent of markets, NCQA awarded Cigna its highest accreditation status of “Excellent” for service and clinical quality that meet or exceed NCQA's rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.

In 63 percent of markets, NCQA awarded Cigna “Commendable” status for service and clinical quality that meet NCQA's rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.

In six percent of markets, NCQA awarded Cigna “Accredited” status for service and clinical quality that meet NCQA’s basic requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.

“We’re very pleased with these results, which underscore Cigna's ongoing commitment to improving health care quality and affordability and patient satisfaction with care,” said Dr. Dick Salmon, Cigna's national medical director for performance measurement and improvement.

“We congratulate Cigna for its outstanding NCQA accreditation results,” said Helen Darling, president and chief executive officer of the National Business Group on Health. "Based on a national, multiple-product survey, these results are a strong validation of the consistency of Cigna’s quality programs. Such an emphasis on clinical quality is becoming ever more important with a need to ensure value to consumers and employers."

The NCQA evaluation included 23 Cigna HMO/POS markets, with Cigna HealthCare of California reviewed separately; 36 Connecticut General Life Insurance Company PPO/OAP markets; and 36 Cigna Health and Life Insurance Company PPO/OAP markets.
