“I’m honored to be involved in a group doing such important work to help our nation’s veterans heal from the wounds of war,” FitzPatrick said. Her own dog, Scout, was rescued, and so P2V has double meaning for FitzPatrick. “Anyone who has saved an animal knows the depth of joy and companionship these pets can provide. Research shows that P2V animals are significantly helping wounded veterans cope with civilian life after active duty.”

P2V, based in Washington, D.C., was founded by David Sharpe, who serves as chief executive officer and executive director. He has more than 10 years of federal government and military service, having served six years in the United States Air Force Security Forces, and currently works in the federal government. P2V is an Animal Assisted Activity (AAA) program that recognizes the power of the human-animal relationship and supports those suffering from psychological stress and physical injuries as they pursue recovery with the unconditional love of a pet.

“As a veteran suffering from post-traumatic stress, I know how important my own shelter animal was in my recovery. We are grateful for Cigna’s support of our mission and the meaningful difference we are making in the lives of veterans and sheltered animals,” Sharpe said.

FitzPatrick has served as chief communications officer for Cigna since September 2010 and is a member of the company’s enterprise leadership team. Before joining Cigna in 2010, she was executive vice president at a leading global strategic communications firm where she counseled senior leaders at Fortune 100 companies. FitzPatrick is currently serving as president of the Cigna Foundation.

As part of Cigna's support for veterans, the Cigna Foundation provided a $25,000 grant to P2V.
