Cigna adds data analytics officer to its executive team

As it works to finalize its Express Scripts acquisition by the end of the year, Cigna is carving out a new C-suite position dedicated to data analytics.

The insurer appointed Gina Papush as the global chief data analytics officer, a newly created position that oversees Cigna’s enterprise data and analytics team.

“As our industry evolves, embedding insights and analytics across the enterprise will enhance Cigna’s ability to more rapidly deliver simplified, affordable, personalized and integrated experiences for our customers and clients,” Chris Hocevar, Cigna's president of strategy, segments and solutions said in a statement announcing the new position.

Papush has deep experience in data analytics strategy, most recently as the chief data and analytics officer at QBE Insurance Group, a global insurance company headquartered in Australia. Last year, Papush was selected by as one of Insurance Business America’s Elite Women. Prior to her four years at QBE she held senior positions at Citi Group and GE Capital.

The appointment comes as the payer industry is placing more focus on data analytics. Last week Humana announced the launch of “Studio H,” a new 40,000 square-foot hub in Boston dedicated to digital analytics.

As part of that new center, Humana also created a chief digital health and analytics officer, naming former USAA chief technology officer Heather Cox to lead the effort.
