CMH signs contract to become a Medical Home Network with the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services

COLUMBIA, S.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Carolina Medical Homes, LLC announced today that it will enter the South Carolina Medicaid program on March 1st and begin providing coordinated care services through a network of primary care physicians. The contract between Carolina Medical Homes, LLC, a new Medicaid Medical Homes program, and the South Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (SCDHHS) was signed this week.

Carolina Medical Homes is a South Carolina company formed in 2010, with offices in Columbia. The company has built its primary care network rapidly, having contracted with primary care physicians in 26 counties. Senior management includes Dr. Michael Musci, Chief Executive Officer and Medical Director, with an extensive career as a physician executive; and Mrs. Judi Ryder, Chief Operating Officer, who has a long career with Medicaid health plans in several states. The founders of the company include executives who have combined careers as both successful primary care physicians and managed care executives.

“Carolina Medical Homes is dedicated to working with its network of primary care physicians in a way that is not intrusive, clinically helpful, and rewarding,” stated Dr. Musci. “We believe the medical homes model is the best solution for the State, for providers and for beneficiaries in the effort to increase care coordination, reduce costs, and improve quality.”

Carolina Medical Homes will continue to grow its physician network and executives expect the company to become statewide within a few months. There is growing doctor satisfaction with the medical homes model since it helps doctors with coordinating patient care and improving quality. SCDHHS will soon require that most Medicaid beneficiaries participate in a medical home or managed care program. SCDHHS has been forward looking and other states have emulated it. According to independent actuaries the medical home model program has saved South Carolina millions of dollars. A University of South Carolina study found that medical homes and managed care improved quality of care for Medicaid beneficiaries in South Carolina.
