California Health Plans Cautiously Approach the Future as Healthcare Reform Effects Play Out

California Health Plan Analysis Now Available from HealthLeaders-InterStudy

NASHVILLE, Tenn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- HealthLeaders-InterStudy, a leading provider of managed care market intelligence, reports that health plans in California emerged from an enrollment slump in 2010 with slightly better prospects for commercial growth in 2011. According to the recent California Health Plan Analysis, even though carriers note a pickup in business this year, a fragile economy and uncertainty about healthcare reform will continue to hold back significant commercial gains, while the lack of aggressive product and pricing wars should keep current market shares intact.

The weak job market continued to put a damper on enrollment growth for California’s major insurers in 2010. Some of the state’s largest health insurers lost commercial business during the year. One exception was HMO giant Kaiser Foundation Health Plan, the state’s largest insurer and one of the few to add commercial members during the tough economy, according to the report.

“The weak economy held back growth for many of the major carriers in California in 2010,” says Chris Lewis, senior market analyst with HealthLeaders-InterStudy. “So far, we are not seeing the aggressive plays for market share that we’ve seen in the past. Companies are moving more cautiously as they continue to keep an eye on federal healthcare reform developments.”

Other topics highlighted in the recent California Health Plan Analysis include:

  • Legislative activities that could affect member cost shares of specialty drugs
  • Early development of accountable care organizations and the opportunity they provide to physicians
  • Commercial enrollment growth trends
  • Overview of growth in managed Medicaid (Medi-Cal) and children’s health insurance programs
