Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona Seeking Healthy, Kid-Friendly Recipe Contributions for Walk On! Cooking Challenge

Public to vote to determine the grand-prize winner

PHOENIX--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- As part of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Arizona’s 2012 Walk On! program, Phoenix and Tucson residents ages 9-12 are invited to enter the Kids’ Cooking Challenge, which encourages children to share their favorite healthy side dishes for a chance to win prizes. Five top entries will be chosen based on originality, potential tastiness, and nutrition; the recipes will go head-to-head in a public vote for the grand-prize winner.

The Walk On! Kids’ Cooking Challenge will be open for recipe submissions January 1-25, 2012. From February 11-21, 2012, the public will be able to vote online for their favorite dish, and the grand-prize winner will be announced on February 22, 2012.

To be considered, each recipe must be an original recipe for a hot or cold side dish; must include at least one fruit and/or vegetable; must be able to be cooked on a stovetop, in an oven or in a microwave; and must be able to be cooked within 20 minutes (not including prep time). Five kids will be chosen as finalists and will have their recipes posted online at azblue.com/WalkOn. All finalists will receive a cooking prize pack. The grand-prize winner will receive an Xbox Kinect game system and may also be invited to show the dish on TV in a local cooking demonstration.

Visit azblue.com/WalkOn for complete contest details or to submit a recipe online beginning January 1, 2012. All entries must be submitted no later than Wednesday, January 25, 2012, to be considered.

Now in its seventh year, the Walk On! program is a consistent component for many fifth-grade classrooms around Arizona, supporting schools’ efforts to teach the importance of good nutrition and physical activity. The Walk On! Challenge is a free health and fitness challenge implemented in classrooms each year in February designed to motivate fifth-grade students across Arizona to incorporate healthy habits into their daily routines for a healthier future.

The Kids’ Cooking Challenge is open to all Valley children ages 9-12, regardless of whether their class is participating in the Walk On! Challenge.
