Blue Care Network's Wellness Efforts Pay Off for Michigan Businesses; Lowest Average Rate Increases in Four Years; Refunds for A

SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Sept. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Blue Care Network of Michigan today issued its lowest average statewide rate increases for Michigan employers since 2008 – and also announced that it is notifying about 5,200 Michigan employers that they will receive a 2.5 percent refund of billed premiums because their health care costs came in lower than expected in 2011.

"The Blues ask employers every day to embrace wellness in the workplace and give employees incentives to become healthier.  In return, we promise lower health care costs and insurance costs – and today we make good on that promise," said Kevin Klobucar, BCN president and CEO.

The overall statewide average rate increase for the BCN small group market for first quarter 2012 is 6.7 percent.

Additionally, about 5,200 BCN groups in the small group segment (50 employees and fewer) are receiving letters this week that notify them of an average 2.5 percent return of their 2011 billed premiums. Data show these groups have experienced a lower than expected use of medical services in 2011, which has reduced their costs.

"The Blues work every day to provide quality health care coverage while balancing costs," Klobucar said.  "We provide products that encourage healthy behaviors, programs that promote preventive care and wellness, and networks of high quality doctors and hospitals.  This approach is working and translates into lower costs for Michigan businesses."
