Ascension Health getting into insurance game

Ascension Care Management LLC, the population health unit of Ascension Health, the nation's largest nonprofit and Catholic health system, has spent $50 million to acquire Michigan-based for-profit U.S. Health and Life Insurance, according to Healthcare Payer News. Previously, the insurer was acquired through U.S. Health Holdings, which was founded in 1995 by Anthony Lapiana, who specialized in insurance for labor unions (and denied alleged links to the Detroit mafia). Lapiana stands to be the main benefactor in the sale. Ascension plans to target small businesses in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, according to a notice of acquisition filed with the Michigan Department of Insurance and Financial Services.
