Anthem slammed with lawsuit after refusing to cover hepatitis C treatment

Anthem Blue Cross faces a lawsuit after Shima Andre of West Hollywood claimed the insurer refused to cover her hepatitis C treatment she said would cure her infection, reported the Los Angeles Times. Anthem defended itself in a denial letter, noting that the controversial drug Harvoni--which has a pricetag of $99,000--is "not medically necessary." Anthem wrote that it does, in fact, cover Harvoni but only when a liver biopsy shows a certain amount of scarring. According to records, Andre's liver did not have this amount of scarring. The lawsuit also mentions Anthem's breach of contract, infliction of emotional distress and unfair business practices. Article
