Analyst Available to Comment on the Potential Changes to Healthcare Reform After 2010 Election

Paula Wade, assistant director of managed market analysis with HealthLeaders-InterStudy, is available to discuss implications of healthcare reform as a result of the 2010 election. Additionally, HealthLeaders-InterStudy has prepared an executive briefing entitled Healthcare Reform After the 2010 Election: Implementation Just Got a Lot Harder, which outlines how certain aspects of healthcare reform, such as Medicaid expansion and health insurance exchanges, will be affected and what these changes mean for the pharmaceutical industry.

Ms. Wade can address the following topics:

  • Medicare Reform—HealthLeaders-InterStudy predicts that Congress will defund the establishment of an Independent Advisory Board, which was tasked with controlling Medicare spending. The pharmaceutical industry had feared this board would recommend price controls on Medicare prescription medications.
  • Medicaid Expansion—The 2014 expansion of Medicaid will bring a substantial volume boost to the pharmaceutical industry, particularly in the category of mental health drugs. But Republicans at the state and federal level may push to delay the expansion that was to give 16 million adults coverage.
  • Health Insurance Exchanges—State-level health insurance exchanges are supposed to determine eligibility for and administer subsidies, and will offer side-by-side comparisons of plan benefits and out-of-pocket costs. However, newly elected legislators and governors are talking about holding out on exchange-building in hope that Republicans will take over the Senate, White House or both in the 2012 election. Ms. Wade can discuss how health plans are responding to states' likelihood to move forward with reform and to what degree.

Members of the media may request to speak with Ms. Wade and receive a copy of the executive brief by contacting Erin O'Leary at 781.993.2641 or [email protected].
