Aetna, Zoom+Care target millennials in tech-driven coordinated care model

Aetna and Oregon-based clinic system ZOOM+Care are teaming up on a technology-driven coordinated care product designed to reduce costs and boost patient experience.

The companies recently announced a new accountable care organization commercial plan that will be available to fully insured and self-insured larger employers in the Portland area. Through the program, the insurer will reward ZOOM-Care providers for meeting spending and quality goals, including chronic disease management and hospital readmissions, all of which can be expensive.

The ACO will also allow patients to schedule appointments, talk with their providers, access their health records and check lab results through a website and mobile app. Such patient-centered technology has been a major goal of the Trump administration.

Employers could save as much as 15% on spending compared to other Aetna products, the companies said.

John Wagner, Network Market Head at Aetna, said ZOOM+Care's structure and focus on patient experience are an important part of the program.

"I've never experienced another provider organization that is focused on the customer as they are," Wagner told FierceHealthcare. "They really make a more robust effort to be a part of their patients' experience, and they've designed their healthcare delivery system around that experience, and they're very focused on delivering a consistent, high-value customer experience."

The insurer began marketing the program to insurance producers earlier this month and purchasing starts July 1. Wagner added that the plan could reach an oft-difficult demographic.

"The Portland metro area is drawing in a lot of high-tech companies, and a lot of young people, and our target customer is a millennial,” he said.
