Aetna on Tuesday unveiled an updated version of the mobile app, iTriage, which it purchased from Healthagen last December. The new iTriage app allows Aetna customers to research symptoms, locate a nearby provider and book appointments, reported the Hartford Business Journal.
Already used by 5 million people, iTriage is one of the most downloaded health and fitness apps on both the Apple and Android platforms, Third Age reported.
"Consumer demand and technology innovations have driven dramatic changes in the way we purchase almost every item today - except health care," Aetna CEO Mark Bertolini said in the Third Age article. "iTriage puts the consumer in the center of the equation and gives them the power to make health care decisions when, where and how it's most convenient for them. It's a revolutionary concept that will change the way Americans shop for health care, and one that we think is long overdue."
The iTriage app is part of Aetna's new CarePass platform, which will allow members to share information across applications through one sign-on, Insurance & Technology reported. The goal is to let users manage their whole health. Aetna plans to provide additional applications to the CarePass platform soon. It also will open the platform to outside developers later this year, noted Third Age.
Helping guide Aetna's mobile strategy is a research paper it commissioned that reveals consumers' challenges in the mobile health market, according to Third Age. The research, which was conducted by the Altimeter Group, found that 82 percent of the 2,000 participants believe having access to healthcare information is important. However, 41 percent said their health information is fragmented.
