SPOTLIGHT: 'Ambient assisted living' system tested in Europe

Here's a new phrase from Europe that may or may not be on its way to America: "ambient assisted living." It means home and mobile monitoring technology that lets elderly and chronically ill patients live semi-independently. A European Union-funded project called Caalyx ("Complete Ambient Assisted Living Experiment")--involving partners from Germany, Ireland, Italy, Portugal and the UK--has moved into a second phase of testing to integrate monitoring sensors into wearable garments and to prepare a study aimed at translating the monitoring system into a marketable product.
