New domestic abuse app debuts; Telehealth expansion bill could save California $400M;

> A Florida women's shelter has created a smartphone app to help physicians more regularly identify women who may be physically abused. The R3 App (Recognize, Respond, Refer) is based on the 13-year-old HITS process created by Kevin Sherin, Director of the Orange County (Fla.) health department. Announcement

> The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is handing out $25 million to behavioral health organizations for implementing online health records, with a special emphasis on mobile tools. Article

> California's recent telehealth expansion bill could save the state anywhere from $100 million to $400 million, depending upon the number of patients it's used on, according to new data from the Center for Connected Health Policy. Article

> Verizon is providing a $20,000 grant to the University of Virginia's College at Wise to teach nursing students about telehealth. Once developed, the curriculum will be made available to other universities in the state. Press release

> Three thousand shoes with embedded GPS locators--to help track Alzheimer's patients if they wander--will be available on the market next month, according to manufacturer GTX Corp. IT took GTX two years to develop the product and bring the shoes to market, company officials say. They'll cost about $300 a pair. Article

> You don't have to be big to be innovative. Tiny 25-bed critical access hospital Grand Ronde Hospital in La Grande, Ore., has a huge telehealth program that just won the Health Devices Achievement Award from the ECRI Institute. The hospital offers 16 different services via telehealth, including pulmonology, radiology and lab. Next it's tackling the big Kahuna--cancer treatment--developing a tele-oncology protocol in the near future, hospital officials say. Press release
