The next generation of BlueButton for Medicare beneficiaries is underway: BlueButton on Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR).
The new API-based service will aim to "provide a way for beneficiaries to connect their data to the applications, services and research programs they trust," Mark Scrimshire, a member of the Entrepreneur-in-Residence program at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, writes at the HHS Idea Lab blog.
But the question of how to safeguard the data remains unanswered.
Scrimshire writes that he is working with DirectTrust.org and The National Association for Trusted Exchange on an "API that bridges the Direct and FHIR worlds and enables FHIR implementers ... to leverage the Direct Trust bundles as a baseline for trusting entities that apply to access a FHIR API.
