Surescripts Adds 19 Healthcare Organizations to National Network
Surescripts, the nation’s largest health information network, has expanded to connect an additional 19 state health information exchanges (HIEs) and health information service providers (HISPs), enabling clinical data to be shared electronically and facilitating improved care coordination among providers with access to Surescripts’ secure and integrated network services.
“We are undergoing a significant shift from a volume- to value-based healthcare system and our business is evolving to meet the future needs of the entire healthcare ecosystem,” said Harry Totonis, president and chief executive officer of Surescripts. “The continued growth of the Surescripts network is driven by the fact that healthcare communities are realizing that electronic health information exchange is necessary to transform the way healthcare is delivered at the patient level and the increasingly rapid implementation of the federal government’s Meaningful Use guidelines.”
Surescripts’ new network participants for health information exchange include:
These new connections complement Surescripts’ national reach, while also facilitating care coordination at the community level. For example, most of upstate New York is now connected with the addition of HealtheConnections, HEALTHeLINK and Rochester RHIO. Further, the addition of Great Lakes HIE, Michigan Health Connect and MiHIN has significantly increased Surescripts’ clinical interoperability reach in Michigan, a leader in interstate health information exchange.
“Michigan is an early adopter of electronic health information sharing,” said Jeff Livesay, associate director of the Michigan Health Information Network. “The Surescripts network helps us break down technical barriers and provides a secure and reliable solution to maintain continuity of care across health care providers and organizations in our state and beyond. We are excited to be part of this innovative network.”
Surescripts’ new connections will facilitate seamless, cost-effective health information sharing across local and regional care communities. In this capacity, Surescripts serves as an HIE connection gateway for network participants and supports Direct-compliant services.
“Surescripts understands the diverse needs of organizations within the healthcare industry, and as such, we have created a network that offers robust and innovative solutions that support standard formats, workflow, processes and customized message content,” said Jeff Miller, senior vice president and general manager of Clinical Interoperability for Surescripts. “We are committed to offering scalable information exchange solutions to get the right information in the right hands at the right time, resulting in more efficient workflows, higher quality of care and increased patient safety.”
Surescripts is a founding member of DirectTrust, an independent non-profit association whose mission is to develop and promote rules and best practices around security and trust in electronic health information exchange. A number of these new network participants are also members of DirectTrust, including Cerner Corporation, CliniSync, Colorado Regional Health Information Organization, Greater Rochester Regional Health Information Organization, HealtheConnections, HEALTHeLINK, ILHIE, Informatics Corporation of America, KeyHIE, MaxMD and MiHIN. Surescripts’ full accreditation from the Direct Trusted Agent Accreditation Program (DTAAP) for HISPs and its ISO 27001 certification for the e-prescribing environment underscore the company’s lead role in creating a secure network for the exchange of clinical health information.
