Stillwater Medical Center Enhances Patient Care and Safety by Sharing Data Between its Vital Signs Monitors and Hospital I

AOI’s Accelero Connect interface enables Stillwater to automatically integrate patient data, resulting in improved workflow and more complete patient records

DALLAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Accent on Integration (AOI), a leading provider of integration software and medical device connectivity solutions, today announced that Stillwater Medical Center, in Stillwater, Okla., has leveraged AOI’s Accelero Connect interface to automate how vital signs data is captured and recorded in its ICU. By using Accelero Connect to enable data sharing between its patient monitoring equipment and the Hospital Information System (HIS), Stillwater significantly improved patient care and safety by reducing the risk of possible documentation errors, such as transposing vital sign numbers, while also streamlining nurse workflow.

“Prior to the Accelero Connect implementation, our nurses spent a lot of time on clerical duties. For instance, the ICU nursing staff had to manually record patient vital signs every 15 minutes and then re-enter that information into the HIS,” said Cindy Carreno, RN, clinical manager at Stillwater Medical Center. “With Accelero Connect, real-time, patient-centered information automatically integrates into the HIS, so nurses can focus on patients not paperwork.”

In addition to streamlining nurse workflow by eliminating redundant documentation, Stillwater also uses Accelero Connect to give clinicians easier access to the data they need to provide exceptional patient care. For example, Stillwater physicians can now access patient vitals in real-time to identify trends and prescribe corresponding treatments. And because of the success Stillwater experienced in its ICU, the hospital is looking to implement the AOI solution in other departments to achieve the same patient care and safety enhancements, as well as workflow improvements.

“Technology can drive tremendous value, especially when it eliminates ineffective, time-consuming and potentially error-prone processes,” said Chris Roark, CIO of Stillwater Medical Center. “By using AOI’s Accelero Connect interface, we are not only eliminating these inefficient processes to improve patient care, workflow and patient safety, but we are also integrating disparate solutions to leverage our technology to its fullest potential.”

A critical part of Stillwater’s integration success comes from AOI’s customizable ADT interface, which allows the hospital to use multiple patient-matching strategies to ensure accuracy and enhance patient care. From the time a patient is registered, their vital signs information is automatically captured and matched to the correct HIS record, ensuring more accurate and complete longitudinal records.

“As hospitals and healthcare organizations look to make healthcare IT more meaningful, it is important to recognize the role that integration and data-sharing capabilities will have in helping them reach their IT goals,” said Marc C. Andiel, CEO and co-founder of AOI. “Stillwater Medical Center is an example of what can be achieved with intelligent integration solutions, and we look forward to working with them as they continue to interconnect their disparate technology systems and medical devices for additional data sharing, patient care and operational improvements.”
