Social Interest Solutions (SIS) Awarded Grant to Assess the State of New York’s Information Technology Readiness for Healt

SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Social Interest Solutions (SIS), a mission-driven, nonprofit organization dedicated to leveraging technology innovation to improve consumers’ access to eligible health and human services, today announced that it was awarded a grant from the New York State Health Foundation to work with State agencies and other stakeholders to assess the State’s information technology systems in preparation for the implementation of a New York State Health Insurance Benefit Exchange.

“The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is a game changer both in terms of the culture of enrollment in public and subsidized health insurance and in terms of the technical infrastructure necessary to support the enrollment process for public and private coverage,” said David Sandman, from the New York State Health Foundation. “Social Interest Solutions will help the state assess its IT assets with an eye towards what can be leveraged and what is missing.”

To meet the 2014 implementation timeline for healthcare reform, states must take measures to ensure IT systems fulfill federal requirements and evolving guidelines. “Like other states, New York State’s IT systems must support Health Insurance Exchanges that connect all consumers to the appropriate coverage opportunities,” said Claudia Page, co-director, Social Interest Solutions. “Social Interest Solutions, in partnership with The Lewin Group, a healthcare and human services consulting firm, is producing a systems gap analysis to assist New York State in preparing to launch an Exchange and meet related ACA requirements by 2014.”

The project kicked off at the first of the year and will wrap up in April, providing timely information to the New York State Health Foundation, the State and its stakeholders. Social Interest Solutions is underway conducting an eligibility and enrollment systems inventory and examining the State’s existing IT assets and deficiencies. By working with various stakeholders and constituents and mapping the State’s existing IT assets to the functional requirements mandated by ACA, Social Interest Solutions will identify the strengths, weaknesses, and disconnects with the systems currently in use or under development in New York State. Ultimately, a plan defining the best and most realistic design for adapting and extending New York’s existing systems to meet Federal eligibility and enrollment mandates will be developed.
