RelayHealth Gives Patients Immediate Access to Patient Health Record Data via Blue Button®

RelayHealth supports “setting data free”

ATLANTA--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- RelayHealth, a leading provider of connectivity solutions for health information exchange, patient-centered medical home and clinical collaboration, announced its support of the Blue Button® initiative by enhancing its existing capabilities around downloading and transporting patient personal health records (PHR). Now, every patient who accesses his or her health information on the RelayHealth network has more options to download, print, and share that information with their providers with a single click.

The President of the United States first announced the Blue Button initiative in August 2010. The concept was simple: patients should have one-click access to all of their personal healthcare data. The Department of Veterans Affairs developed the program in collaboration with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Department of Defense, along with the Markle Foundation's Consumer Engagement Workgroup.

During a recent conference held by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology, the challenge was given to health information technology vendors to “set data free” – meaning to let all patients have easy, secure access to their health information through the Blue Button.

Through the RelayHealth network, individuals can access their RelayHealth patient health record data by simply logging in to RelayHealth at http://app.relayhealth.com and then clicking on the Blue Button. The downloadable data is available to patients in a text file, as an enhanced PDF, or as a standard Continuity of Care Document (CCD) which can be imported or shared with healthcare information systems. As one of the early healthcare technology vendors to provide patients with secure access to their healthcare data, RelayHealth is proud to support this campaign and display the Blue Button which will facilitate greater patient access to their health information.

“While RelayHealth has always offered one-click access to the CCD, we are pleased to support the Blue Button initiative,” said Jim Bodenbender, president, RelayHealth Connectivity Solutions. “The Blue Button puts a consumer-friendly face to patient health record data.” Bodenbender continued, “Giving patients easier access to their healthcare data will help create more informed consumers and help our nation achieve better healthcare outcomes. Easier access will also increase the ability of consumers to accumulate personal electronic health information from multiple providers and to actively engage in managing their own health care”
