Population health, patient engagement drive hospital IT purchase plans

Population health and patient engagement continue to be the biggest drivers for hospital IT purchasing plans, according to a new report published by peer60. Data security also is a high priority for provider organizations in 2016, despite ranking near the bottom of health IT leaders' wish lists for 2015.

Overall, 567 hospital leaders responded to the survey; 29 percent of responses came from individuals at hospitals with 1-25 beds, while another 20 percent of responses came from individuals at hospitals with 101-250 beds. Individuals from ambulatory hospitals represented the lowest percentage of responses (9 percent), while hospitals with 500-1,000 beds and 1,001-plus beds, respectively, each represented 10 percent of responses.

In terms of overall electronic health record vendor mindshare, Epic ranked No. 1, with MEDITECH and Cerner also considered "mindshare leaders," and athenahealth was noted for being the "fastest riser" among vendors. Epic also ranked first for population health, patient engagement and revenue cycle mindshare.

Cisco was tops in data security mindshare at 30 percent, 11 percentage points ahead of VMWare (19 percent).

A Black Book report published earlier this month concluded that vendor tech support is growing as a key factor for providers in choosing new health IT vendors. Eighty-two percent of respondents to Black Book's survey of 2,000 users spanning 252 hospitals called vendor IT support "a leading competitive differentiator."

According to a recent report published by Everest Group, outsourcing for healthcare technology will grow in the next four years, and is set to reach $68.3 billion by 2020.

The number of providers who changed their electronic health record systems jumped four-fold from 2013 to 2014, according to statistics from the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT released in September.
