Pediatric med adherence app wins NewYork-Presbyterian challenge

A smartphone app that helps families manage medication adherence came out on top during the NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital InnovateNYP Pediatric App Challenge, according to an announcement

The tool, FHIR Starters, was developed by two U.S. Army service personnel and took the first place prize of $25,000. A mental health screen app, Teen Screen, took second place with a $10,000 prize, and a patient engagement app, NYP Care Companion, took third place, winning $5,000.

The 10-week competition included 16 teams featuring designers, developers, clinicians and mHealth startups.

An increasing number of healthcare providers are seeing the potential benefits of patient engagement through mobile apps, as well as ways the tools can help healthcare professionals. As FierceMobileHealthcare has reported, Boston Children's Hospital researchers have created a 14-point mobile app development guideline to help developers with system integration, compliance adherence and software deployment strategies.

Daniel Barchi, M.D., CIO at NewYork-Presbyterian, one of the judges, said in the announcement that the inventions in the challenge were "very impressive."

"The presenting teams’ combined creativity, collaboration and forward-thinking solutions prove to be very promising as we use digital technology to garner solutions in the healthcare landscape,” Barchi said.
