Michigan pushes further into statewide secure Health Information Sharing

TROY and EAST LANSING, Michigan, October 7, 2014 – Molina Healthcare, Inc. today announced that its subsidiary, Molina Healthcare of Michigan, Inc., has joined Michigan's efforts to improve health care statewide through electronic data sharing as the newest Qualified Data Sharing Organization (QO) with the Michigan Health Information Network (MiHIN). The move will provide access to the benefits of secure electronic data sharing for the hundreds of thousands of patients and providers under the Molina umbrella, including thousands of low- income families in Michigan who depend on Medicaid for their well-being.

Molina Healthcare's first information sharing collaboration within Michigan will involve MiHIN's Statewide Admit, Discharge, Transfer (ADT) Notification service. By participating in the statewide ADT service – which is a legally and technically secure means to help coordinate care for patients with multiple providers and with payers – Molina will securely receive ADT notifications whenever members are admitted, discharged or transmitted from a care facility.

ADTs will be sent through MiHIN's network, which already receives 77 percent of the admissions statewide. This service automates a formerly labor intensive process and further improves health care coordination statewide.

"Molina Healthcare is pleased to join the MiHIN data sharing community," said Stephen Harris, president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan. "We strive to provide access to high quality health care and this partnership will enable Molina to improve care coordination and continuity of care for our members."

As an organization now qualified to share health information with MiHIN, Molina gains further opportunities to participate in transferring and receiving patient care information under the MiHIN legal structure. After activating the ADT service, Molina can activate additional services representing a wide variety of health information scenarios such as medication reconciliation and clinical quality measures. This coordinated care data provided electronically at the point of care gives doctors a more complete picture of a patient's medical condition and history, allowing more informed medical decisions and leading to improved outcomes and lower costs for patients, providers, and payers.

Molina Healthcare of Michigan is one of the largest Medicaid health-maintenance organizations in the state serving 244,000 members as of June 30, 2014. Long Beach, California-based Molina Healthcare is a multi-state health care organization that provides managed health care services under the Medicaid and Medicare programs and through the state insurance marketplaces.

Molina has served Michigan communities since 1997 and today operates in 11 states.

"Molina represents a very important beneficiary segment of Michigan's population which will soon benefit from health information sharing first hand," said Dr. Tim Pletcher, Executive Director of MiHIN. "Molina's participation in Michigan's successful network of networks has a multiplying effect on the value of the information being shared to the growing number of organizations already sharing through MiHIN. Molina's activation will aid both the Medicaid population and those dually eligible with Medicare."
