Michael McCoy named first chief health information officer at ONC

Michael James McCoy, M.D., will soon become the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT's first chief health information officer.

McCoy, a board certified obstetrician/gynecologist, will begin his role on Jan. 26 and report directly to National Coordinator Karen DeSalvo, she wrote in a memo to ONC staff.

As CHIO, McCoy will "lead development of ONC clinical policy for standards and regulatory matters to help ensure ONC initiatives improve health beyond healthcare," according to DeSalvo. He will also be the lead clinical subject matter expert on interoperability.

McCoy has more than a decade of experience with heath information technology and has special interests in interoperability, user experience and person-centered care. He has also been involved with standards development. Letter
