MI to e-connect 15,000 doctors statewide

The Michigan State Medical Society has worked out a deal with Covisint that will allow 15,000 of its physicians to connect to each other via an electronic network for free.

The online system will allow the doctors to use e-prescriptions and communicate safely about patients with each other, as well as check lab reports and patient schedules online. But the doctors will pay monthly subscription fees to Covisint for other services, such as accessing patients' EMRs.

The system will launch in January 2009 and connect the state's nine regional health information organizations.
