MedVirginia Profiled in Report on HIE Leadership and Sustainability

Secrets of HIE Success Revealed: Lessons from the Leaders released today

RICHMOND, Va.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- National eHealth Collaborative (NeHC) today released its highly anticipated report, Secrets of HIE Success Revealed: Lessons from the Leaders during a live webinar program. The report features case studies of 12 sustainable, mature health information exchange (HIE) organizations from across the US, including MedVirginia, a Richmond, VA based provider-owned organization serving central Virginia and the Hampton Roads region.

“With a new environment of increasing accountability in healthcare, the need for effective, sustainable HIE to improve quality, care coordination, and cost-effectiveness is becoming even more important,” said Kate Berry, CEO of NeHC. “This report distills the critical dimensions required for a successful and lasting HIE operation and is intended to contribute to a cohesive national roadmap for nationwide HIE. We are pleased to showcase such distinguished organizations and we believe others will learn from the triumphs and challenges of these 12 HIEs.”

MedVirginia was selected as an HIE Leader due to its involvement in ground-breaking initiatives including being the first HIE to be live on the Nationwide Health Information Network; the first HIE to exchange records electronically with the Social Security Administration to aide in determining Social Security disability benefits and the first community to go live with the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record with the Veterans Administration and Department of Defense.

MedVirginia attributes its success to having built a “framework of trust” within the community. “As a provider-owned enterprise, MedVirginia’s primary focus has been establishing trust with, and bringing value to, physicians and hospitals,” states Michael Matthews, MedVirginia’s CEO. The mission of MedVirginia is to organize, coordinate and serve provider interests in healthcare information technology by providing a system for community-wide clinical information exchange that enables improved clinical workflow and the attainment of meaningful use of health IT.

Secrets of HIE Success Revealed: Lessons from the Leaders was developed based on candid and extensive interviews with senior executives from each of the 12 HIEs. These organizations were chosen to be profiled based on their innovative strategies and business models, the value and impact they are having in their respective communities, and their maturity in achieving sustainability.
