Karen DeSalvo unveils funding opportunities, challenges focusing on standards, APIs

National Coordinator for Health IT Karen DeSalvo announced two new funding opportunities and a new challenge around health data at Health Datapalooza in the District of Columbia Monday.

For the High Impact Pilots Cooperative Agreement Program, ONC aims to "catalyze the implementation of standards and technology" to boost health data sharing, improve care and positively impact patient experiences. Total funding for this award will be $1.25 million, and according to ONC, at least three awards--but likely no more than seven--will be distributed.

The ONC laid out similar guidelines for the Standards Exploration Awards Cooperative Agreement Program, but total funding will be $250,000; a minimum of three awards and a maximum of five will be handed out.

Letters of intent for both are due June 10.

The new challenge, dubbed the Move Health Data Forward Challenge, aims to help with the development of application programming interface solutions. Total prize money for the challenge is $250,000, and the challenge will consist of three phases.
