Google signs business associate agreement for HIPAA compliance

For the first time, Google has agreed to sign HIPAA's business associate agreement for Google Apps, TechRepublic reported. The agreement reached last month covers three Google Apps services--Gmail, Calendar and Drive--as well as the Google Apps Vault service, which enables archiving information from the other three apps. The announcement comes a little more than two months after FierceHealthIT reported that information for more than 3,000 patients at Oregon Health & Science University was put at risk when medical residents used Google Drive and Gmail to maintain a spreadsheet for academic purposes.
