Deloitte's Harry Greenspun: As data goes digital, CIO security challenges grow

Deloitte Center for Health Solutions technology specialist Harry Greenspun wants to let healthcare CIOs know they're about to have their hands full, yet again; as they gather more data, he says, they must secure it, as well.

In an interview with HealthcareInfoSecurity, Greenspun touches on the "robust capabilities" that will become necessary for gathering data.

"The amount of data and the way that it's flowing, both inside and out of the organization, poses some new privacy and security concerns," Greenspun says. "[CIOs] have to really beef up the work they do in this area, expanding the capabilities, bringing in new people with new skill sets and [enhance] the leadership within their organization to meet these challenges."

These challenges arise as data starts to flow in and out of an organization and mobile devices, no longer within four walls, he says. To that end, CIOs--now part of the strategic positioning of an organization--must help to determine both what security challenges will arise, and how they're going to face them.

Additionally, Greenspun calls regulatory compliance a "dual challenge."

"On the one hand, CIOs are pushed to get data to the right people in the right place at the right time," he says. "[B]ut also, the penalties for messing up in that process have gone up considerably."

A HIMSS Analytics report published earlier this month reveals that viability and security of mobile devices remain top of mind for today's health IT leaders. The report, based on a small focus group convened at HIMSS13 in March, finds that while leaders share similar infrastructure priorities, they differ in their plans for taking action on those priorities.
