Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems), maker of the RIVA fully-automated pharmacy IV compounding system, today announced that Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC Children’s) has purchased a new RIVA system. As the only fully-automated IV compounding system available on the market today, RIVA prepares medications for syringes and IV bags in an aseptic environment. The technology provides true walk-away capability, allowing for extended production runs with no staff intervention required.

“We are very excited about our continued partnership with CHOC Children’s,” said Dr. Niels Erik Hansen, president and CEO of IH Systems. “As the very first customer to implement RIVA technology, the hospital exhibited great diligence in evaluating the opportunity to improve safety, efficiency and cost savings. This purchase marks a significant milestone, which speaks to the tangible benefits RIVA provides for many hospital pharmacies.”

RIVA is recognized for its ability to safely and accurately prepare precise compounds in very small quantities. Its patient-specific preparations are based on patient size or weight, essential components of pediatric dosing. With high accuracy and dose repeatability, RIVA can dispense low-volume, low-concentration syringe output and intermediary bags. Further, the system lowers the cost-per-dose of medications and provides a complete electronic audit trail that identifies and labels every dispensed dose.

“We became an early adopter of pharmacy automation technology because of the positive impact we anticipated for our patients and their families,” said Grace Magedman, PharmD, director of pharmacy operations at CHOC Children’s. “We constantly strive to offer the highest standard in patient care through cutting edge technology. Our hospital remains committed to that initiative by assessing further measures to increase efficiency and productivity, and improve patients’ overall experience.”

The RIVA system features updated environmental controls and monitoring capabilities to support the latest Current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) requirements, a critical modification as industry regulations become increasingly stringent. Additionally, RIVA can exchange patient-specific information with medical applications inside the hospital through an HL7 interface. RIVA is USP<797> compliant and can process individual or batch doses in an ISO Class 5 environment. The new system at CHOC will improve workflow for vial handling, dose order management and more.

Founded in 2006, Intelligent Hospital Systems (IH Systems) is a medical device company focused on the design and development of automated solutions for the hospital environment. Based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, IH Systems manufactures RIVA, a fully-automated IV compounding system that prepares medications for syringes and IV bags in an aseptic environment. Using RIVA, hospitals enhance patient safety, lower the cost-per-dose of medications, reduce their vulnerability to medication shortages and cut waste. For more information, visit .
