Headquartered in Marriottsville, MD, BSHSI is a $3.4 billion dollar not-for-profit Catholic health system consisting of more than 22,000 caregivers helping patients in six states. The system owns, manages or joint-ventures a number of healthcare facilities, including 19 acute care hospitals, five long- term care, four assisted living, six retirement communities/senior housing, and 14 home care and hospice services.

The UpToDate text search link prominently located at the top of the clinician’s EMR workspace ensures clinicians have easy and efficient access within the clinical workflow to UpToDate, which provides the most current and authoritative clinical information available on more than 10,000 topics in 21 medical specialties. An additional HL7 Infobutton integration is available via Epic ClinKB. This significantly streamlines the point-of-care decision-making process by providing patient context sensitive UpToDate search results directly from the patient’s Problem List.

“UpToDate has transformed the way we use our EpicCare EMR. By leveraging UpToDate clinical decision support, our clinicians can now instantly access actionable, evidence-based clinical content that is disease- and age-specific without having to interrupt their workflow to launch a web browser window or to enter multiple logins,” said Dr. David Butler, Associate Chief Medical Information Officer, Bon Secours Health System. “We’ve had such a positive response to this new integration that, in the coming months, we plan to deliver even better and more targeted information by adding sidebar hyperlinks to indispensable UpToDate tools such as ‘Practice Changing UpDates’ that highlight new recommendations that may change usual clinical practice, ‘What’s New’ summaries of the most significant, recently-added content, and direct links to UpToDate’s 135-plus medical calculators.”

In addition to clinical decision support that is more tailored to each patient, patients also benefit with access to UpToDate’s patient education content, which is created by the same physicians who author corresponding professional content, ensuring that patients and clinicians work from consistent information. BSHSI clinicians can presently email or print patient education materials for their patients and there are plans to make this material available through their patient portal, MyChart.

BSHSI currently offers UpToDate within its EMR across five states, 14 hospitals and 80 clinics, with plans to fully implement across 15 hospitals and more than 120 clinics by the end of the fiscal year 2014. For sites not currently live on ConnectCare, BSHSI provides its clinicians with so clinicians get UpToDate access on-site, at satellite offices, at home or on the go by using the for iOS, Android and Windows.

Long recognized for its leadership in EMR implementation and adoption, BSHSI is also among the first health systems to be recognized by HIMSS Analytics for having achieved Stage 7—the highest level—on the Electronic Medical Record Adoption Model (EMRAM). Also achieving Stage 7 are BSHSI’s ambulatory clinics, which include 107 providers in 31 practices representing a cross-section of primary care and specialty practices. As of the first quarter of 2013, less than 1 percent of ambulatory facilities and slightly more than 2 percent of inpatient facilities had achieved Stage 7 nationwide.

“BSHSI’s overall EHR strategy has always been focused on and working to improve key drivers such as readmission rates, transitions in care and the reduction of sepsis rates,” said Dr. Marlon Priest, Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, Bon Secours Health System. “Using UpToDate within the EMR and with the mobile app has contributed significantly to our efforts to provide better care to patients by equipping our clinicians with tools they want to use and that work when and where they practice.”

“UpToDate is committed to helping clinicians make better care decisions when and where those clinicians have questions. Working with major EMR providers to offer UpToDate within the clinical workflow is essential to realizing that commitment,” said Denise Basow, MD, Vice President/General Manager and Editor-in-Chief, UpToDate at Wolters Kluwer Health, Clinical Solutions. “The implementation at Bon Secours is a showcase of the myriad benefits of such an integration. UpToDate enhances clinicians’ satisfaction with their EMR and encourages its use, underscoring the value of UpToDate integration to support meaningful use requirements and to improve overall quality of care.”
