ANA Statement on Resignation of Marilyn Tavenner

SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Association (ANA) expresses its sincere appreciation for the work of Marilyn Tavenner, MHA, BSN, RN, administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

"As the first permanent administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) since 2006, Marilyn Tavenner, MHA, BSN, RN, took the helm of CMS during a time of enormous change in our country's health care system, said ANA President Pamela F. Cipriano, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN. Tavenner is a superb, collaborative leader, attributes that allowed her to foster an innovative, patient-centered approach to improving the quality of care.

Her nursing expertise, along with her public and private sector experience, enabled her to guide the opening of the Health Insurance Marketplace. Under Tavenner's leadership, and despite initial challenges, the Marketplace is now thriving and millions of Americans who were previously uninsured now have access to high quality health care. For that, she deserves the highest levels of respect and gratitude."

Tavenner, a former Intensive Care Unit (ICU) nurse, served as chief executive officer of the Hospital Corporation of America and was Virginia's secretary of Health and Human Resources under former Governor Tim Kaine before being confirmed as CMS administrator in 2013.
