announced today that it is sponsoring a symposium called “The DIRECT Revolution: Why Healthcare Is Going DIRECT and How Not to Get Left Behind.” The workshop will discuss the DIRECT communication innovation in healthcare, which is the first step toward creating a health information exchange (HIE) environment. Through DIRECT messaging technology, providers are able to connect with each other and with patients via secure email communication.

“DIRECT is just in its infancy, just like email was in 1991-1992,” said Kelly Lewis, president and chief executive officer of AlliedHIE. “And we all remember how fast and furiously email grew, with all of the bells and whistles added along the way. This workshop is a great opportunity to educate healthcare people in the Harrisburg area about this tremendous opportunity to drive connectivity and improve quality while lowering costs. DIRECT provides a simple, secure and standards-based method to encourage electronic exchange of health information among healthcare providers, particularly those providers that do not have the resources or technical capacity to engage in more comprehensive health information exchange.”

Among the speakers will be John Tempesco, chief marketing officer at . ICA is a national HIE technology company currently working with a statewide HIE in Kansas, numerous regional HIEs in Illinois, Tennessee, Montana and Michigan and IDNs in New Jersey, New York, Massachusetts and Texas.

The company recently went live with Allied-DIRECT in Pennsylvania to enable AlliedHIE to begin recruiting physicians and other providers to sign up for secure DIRECT interactions with each other as part of the statewide DIRECT grant program recently established by the (PAeHC). Allied-DIRECT is powered by ICA’s . CareAlign delivers a comprehensive health information exchange (HIE) and care management solution to hospitals, IDNs, communities and states. Allied-DIRECT is a live DIRECT and Health Information Services Provider (HISP) network and has been established by AlliedHIE and ICA.

By enabling the rapid expansion of information exchange through a fully sustainable model, AlliedHIE’s value-based approach to HIE turns the traditional HIE model on its head. This method partners with organizations individually to identify specific technology and communications issues and delivers targeted information exchange solutions to solve these problems. AlliedHIE’s strategy is in direct opposition to traditional software vendors that sell generic HIE solutions to customers without first diagnosing problems.

AlliedHIE has also created a concept known as Allied Aggregation™, a common sense, patient-centric health IT strategy that aggregates patient connections onto a common technology platform at the point-of-care to advance quality of care, improve patient safety and reduce costs. Bolstering AlliedHIE’s strategy in the HIE marketplace are recent reports by the and which find that too many HIEs have relied on the ‘build it and they will come’ strategy. Both reports assert that HIEs must plan for sustainability from the very beginning, and that if an HIE is not sustainable after initial funding, then careful consideration should be given to the viability of launch.

The symposium will be held on August 29, at 10:00 a.m. in Harrisburg, PA. For more information and to register for the event, click .
