AAMI research focuses on technology management in hospitals

The Technology Management Council of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) has launched a study of technology management in healthcare facilities and hospitals. The AAMI announcement comes as healthcare providers and device manufacturers wait for new regulations on mobile medical devices from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

AAMI, a nonprofit organization representing an alliance of nearly 6,000 members, will identify 10 hospitals for its detailed study of the current state of technology management and the role of the clinical and biomedical engineers who supervise the use of medical devices.

The facilities selected for the AAMI research will include hospitals of different sizes and types; some will perform their own equipment maintenance, while others will outsource that function.

According to AAMI, one of the project's primary goals is to "define resources that could enhance technology management as a field. What types of resources do managers need to enhance their careers and the benefits they provide to their organization? What resources are available, and what needs to be developed?"

AAMI will interview clinical and administrative leaders at the facilities, and later will send a survey with similar questions to its own members. The results will be compiled into a white paper that will be published in June. This report will:

  • Profile the current state of medical technology, and the state of a technology; manager's relationships with colleagues, supervisors, and other hospital staff;
  • Provide a vision for the future of effective equipment management in healthcare facilities;
  • Identify barriers or challenges to achieving that future;
  • Recommend potential projects to move the field forward.
