Healthcare Roundup—Senate to vote on opioid package next week

The Senate will vote next week on a package of measures aimed at responding to the opioid crisis.

Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tenn, who is chairman of the health committee, announced the package of more than 70 proposals was recommended to the full Senate by the health, finance, judiciary, commerce and banking committees.

Alexander said the package includes the STOP Act to stop illegal drugs at the border, would allow the Food and Drug Administration to require prescription opioids be packaged in set amounts and would support the development of nonaddictive drugs for pain. The House has already passed its version of the act.
