Wolters Kluwer Health Unveils One Click Updates with Latest Release of ProVation® Order Sets

Feature dramatically streamlines maintenance of evidence-based order sets

MINNEAPOLIS--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Wolters Kluwer Health, a leading global provider of information for healthcare professionals and students, announced today that it has released a new version of its industry leading electronic order set solution, ProVation®Order Sets, powered by UpToDate®Decision Support. The new release includes the unique One Click Updates tool, which allows hospitals to easily and automatically update order sets to keep current with the latest medical evidence.

“We interviewed CIOs and CMIOs across the country, who shared with us the top challenges they face in developing and maintaining order set libraries,” said Arvind Subramanian, President and CEO, Wolters Kluwer Health Clinical Solutions. “They all voiced a common concern – how to ensure the currency and continued relevance of clinical content within evidence-based order sets. Their feedback led to our development of the innovative One Click Updates feature. It is designed around the basic concept that the task of maintaining an order set library requires vigilant monitoring to identify relevant new medical evidence and a simple process by which to apply it to all impacted order sets.”

An easily customizable order set authoring and management solution, ProVation Order Sets provides flexible integration into clinical processes to streamline the delivery of standardized care for improved patient safety, outcomes, clinician performance and regulatory compliance. One of its primary values is the continuous updates to clinical content and medical evidence, including direct links to UpToDate, the resource of choice for more than 360,000 clinicians.

The One Click Updates tool leverages UpToDate’s Practice Changing Updates feature, which highlights new recommendations that may change usual clinical practice. Enabled by a unique, structured approach to data management, One Click Updates alerts end users to evidence that may trigger the need to modify particular order sets, allowing them to review recommended updates and apply them in a single step across multiple order sets.

Specifically, the One Click Updates feature:

  • Provides a list of new practice-changing updates in a live newsfeed
  • Identifies a list of the order sets or care plans that may be impacted by each update item
  • Recommends specific edits to the content of the impacted order sets
  • Allows the user to apply recommended edits to some or all of the affected order sets or care plans in a single step

“Few hospitals or vendors possess the technical knowledge needed to create or manage content in this way,” wrote David Bousfield, Vice President & Lead Analyst, Outsell, Inc., in the analyst firm’s May report on order set solutions, On the Importance of Maintaining Order. “To do that requires a sophisticated data model and, in addition to a database containing the granular order set content and associated rules, a further database storing the mappings to supporting data resources and details of customer modifications.

“The simplicity with which this new feature can be executed belies the complexity of the data management systems that support it, and which turn the event into a business scalable process,” Bousfield continued. “Gone are the days when order set changes had to be manually re-keyed.”

“Our goal in implementing ProVation Order Sets was to take accepted medical evidence and established best practices and incorporate them into a fluid order set that was under constant surveillance to determine when updates were necessary,” said Dr. Marc Greenwald, Chief of Medicine, Signature Healthcare Brockton Hospital. “With the One Click Updates feature, we now have the ability to easily and automatically apply practice-changing evidence from UpToDate, a tremendous time savings that ensures our order sets catalog remains current and is always based on the most relevant new clinical information.”
