West Virginia University Medical School Expands Use of Integrated Survey System Built on InterSystems CACHÉ High-Performan

Dynamic Clinical Systems Software Enables Patient-Reported Outcomes Documentation

CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- InterSystems Corporation, a global provider of advanced technologies for breakthrough applications, today announced that West Virginia Healthcare is greatly expanding its use of Dynamic Clinical Systems’ (DCS) Web-based Integrated Survey System® (ISS) to include all orthopaedic sub-specialties. The InterSystems CACHÉ high-performance object database is the foundation of DCS’ patient-reported outcomes (PROs) solution.

A user of ISS at its spine center since 2005, West Virginia Healthcare is now using the software to include study management and patient-reported outcomes across all orthopedic specialties, including spine, total joint, shoulder and foot and ankle. West Virginia Healthcare is part of the West Virginia United Health System (WVU), a private, not-for-profit corporation associated with West Virginia University. WVU Hospitals have cared for patients from all 55 West Virginia counties, all 50 states and 16 countries.

“The federal government and the public are rightly demanding objective outcomes measurement and improved quality of care. ISS is designed to deliver the patient-reported outcomes in a way that meets the reporting requirements typical of a pay-for-performance environment,” said Sanford Emery, M.D., M.B.A., and professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthopedics at the West Virginia School of Medicine.

Evolving Medical Research

“Like most academic medical centers, one of WVU’s goals is to produce clinical research that is largely based on surgical outcomes,” said Emery. “In the past, research papers were based on observations of the physician in the office at follow up visits, who would dictate notes that were largely subjective and often inaccurate,” he explained. “This process has significantly evolved to fulfill the increasingly demanding requirements for accuracy and objectivity in PRO surveys that are the foundation of much present day clinical research.”

Emery was introduced to DCS and its ISS software during a visit to Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., where it had been in use for about a year. ISS gathers patient health history and quality of life data to provide and enable quick-glance summary reports, integration across healthcare processes, evidence-based protocols, interdisciplinary patient care, and collaborative research. “Since ISS is on the Web, patients can easily enter data from any location,” Emery noted. Fast response and the reliability of the CACHÉ-based application also ease the process for patients entering ISS data.

In addition to contributing to the advancement of the medical profession and long-term delivery of improved care quality based on clinical research findings, ISS has also eased the process of capturing data from subspecialties, according to Emery. “Spine patients, for example, require different survey questions than hand patients and sports patients. While some data are overlapping, others are very specific to the subspecialty and ISS enables developing those specific surveys,” he said. Emery and the staff at the WVU Department of Orthopedics are currently developing several clinical surveys for subspecialties in orthopedics.

“Measuring and analyzing patient-reported outcomes improves the process of care, creates better research and develops a more complete and accurate picture of care value measurement by utilizing the important, yet often overlooked, patient perspective,” said Chris Weiss, CEO at DCS. “But in order to harness all of this information and use it correctly, Web systems such as ISS need scalability and high performance. Fortunately for us and our customers, InterSystems CACHÉ gives us exactly that.”

“InterSystems specializes in advanced software technologies that enable building and deploying breakthrough applications such as ISS,” said Paul Grabscheid, InterSystems Vice President of Strategic Planning. “We look forward to working with DCS as they continue their leadership role in providing breakthrough clinical reporting solutions.”
