UC Davis reports ER system helps financial turnaround

Despite big losses in early 2005, the University of California Davis Health System is reporting a 31 percent jump in profit this year. The hospital claims the profit is largely due to a new system for tracking patients as they move through the hospital from the emergency room to discharge. Under the oversight of CEO Bob Chason, the new system enabled much more efficient use of trauma beds, resulting in less need to put the ER on diversion and, of course, wringing more cash flow out of its fixed assets.
