Top 10 health systems named for 2011

Thomson Reuters yesterday released its annual list of 10 best health systems in the country. The top 10 list is based on quantitative data that evaluates quality, patient safety and patient satisfaction, such as core measures, mortality rates, length of stay, complications, readmissions, and HCAHPS scores.

Among the best are CareGroup Healthcare System in Boston; Partners HealthCare in Boston; Cape Cod Healthcare in Hyannis, Mass.; Kettering Health Network in Dayton, Ohio; OhioHealth in Columbus; Advocate Health Care in Oak Brook, Ill.; NorthShore University HealthSystem in Evanston, Ill.; Maury Regional Healthcare System in Columbia, Tenn.; Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn.; and Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids, Mich.

"Health systems that win this award outperformed their peers by providing better care, following standards of care more closely, saving more lives, creating fewer patient complications, making fewer patient safety errors, and earning better overall patient satisfaction scores," states the Thomson Reuters website. "Leaders at these top systems highlight the opportunity to build system-level quality initiatives and a culture that increases value to patients and communities."

Leaders watch closely to top organizations as performance and patient experience continue to be tied to reimbursement.
