Statement on President Obama’s Drug Shortage Announcement from Premier COO Mike Alkire

CHARLOTTE, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Premier healthcare alliance commends President Obama and his administration for taking action to help further reduce and prevent drug shortages and subsequent price gouging that is challenging our nation’s providers to effectively care for patients and control costs.

As the White House referenced in their release, Premier research estimated that gray market vendors are attempting to mark up shorted drugs by an average of 650 percent and as much as 4,500 percent. Additional research from Premier suggests drug shortages cost U.S. care providers at least $200 million annually while posing patient safety risks.

At the same time, part of the solution to the drug shortage problem resides with better coordination within the supply chain. To that end, Premier hosted a session with generic drug manufacturers last week to examine the complex causes of drug shortages and to begin the process of identifying market based solutions to the problem. As one example of a takeaway from the session, Premier will work with our colleagues in the GPO industry to formulate a strategy to take back to manufacturers and distributors that will help protect against hording and shortages that have impacted hospital care of patients.

Premier is also supportive of the bipartisan legislation that will give FDA new tools to prevent drug shortages. However, we know this issue requires collaboration among stakeholders across both the public and private sector.

No one cause explains drug shortages and no easy solution exists to address the problem. The Premier healthcare alliance is determined to help find ways to reduce the short term impact of drug shortages and solve the problem in the long term.
